They need a hot side but they also need to be able to get a way from the heat and cool down. With their requirements smaller enclosures make that more difficult to do,.. not to mention humidity issues.

With a smaller enclosure you have less options. For bulb wattage and temps you can only go so high before the temps are too hot without a cool spot that's low enough. You can try raising the bulb but they have distance requirements or recommendations as well.
And that's just one part of the equation.
