Hey all I got a 3 year old 4' long argentine black and white tegu from my local reptile shop yesterday. I have been looking at the guy for like 2 weeks and I just fell in love with him, he's super smart, already tame he's just awesome.

My main problem is that I'm still a little scared of him, I have a sliding top enclosure and everytime I put my hand in there he is trying to climb up me.

The reptile shop owner said to wait 3 days before handling him, but he is just so tame and wants to come get love like a dog it seems like. He'll nestle his head up in between my stomach and arm, and try to dig into me.

He ate a mouse within an hour of me getting him in his new setup, and he looks really healthy.

I'm just curious, what do I need to watch for when handling him, sometimes he tries to wriggle away and go on the floor, but my roommates have already made it quite clear that won't be happening lol.

Another question of mine is should I be feeding him daily, the reptile store owner said the best diet was switching off between hard boiled eggs, mice, ground turkey, and pre-made monitor/tegu food.

Also, what about those lizard leashes they sell, does anyone own one of those? How does your tegu like it?

I'm going to try to post pics as I know everyone on all reptile forums love new animal pictures, but thank you in advance for your answers, and ADVICE, because any ADVICE is definetely helpful with a brand new animal like this.

This is actually a very, very good thing! You want him coming to you, this means he trusts you and is tame.

Now about that enclosure, front doors or a door that opens from the front is always best, but yours doesn't seem to mind.

What type of set up are you housing him in?
