Hi! I'm soon going to own my first tegu. I have a fair amount of reptile knowledge from previous pets, my largest lizard being a chinese water dragon. I homemade it's cage (6x2x5 ft) and hope to make a nice cage for my future tegu as well.
I'm going to be acquiring a juvenile tegu, not a hatchling but still fairly small/young.
My first question is, would a 55 last the juvenile a few months while I build the permanent cage? Or should I go with something like a 40 breeder? It only needs to last him 2-3 months or so while I fix up a plan for the final enclosure (it will take me a bit because I'm not too creative lol) and build it. I just wasn't sure what format of cage (long and narrow like a rectangle, or more squared in shape) would benefit the baby.
And, what is the recommended depth of substrate for a hatchling and also for a yearling/adult? I plan to use cypress mulch.
This may be a weird question but I come from the crested gecko community so that's why I ask this... Is the 60-70% humidity a constant factor or do they need a "drying out" period where the humidity falls and then raises again? I am still learning of their natural habitat and how it works.
Last thing; if anyone can direct me to one or three of the best caresheets on argentine b&w tegus, I'd appreciate it. I may have read them already but I want to make sure that I've read the most accurate (upt o date) info I can before acquiring this baby.
Thanks for any and all help! It's much appreciated
