Hi all, been studying up on Tegus for a little while as I wanted to upgrade to a bigger lizard. I been searching around the last few weeks and I found one at a local mom and pops pet store. They had it marked as a Black and White Tegu, well long story I bought it. They werent sure of the locale so Ill ask you guys for help. From what I seen it looks like a Columbian but Im not sure, what do you guys think? Lastly Im attempting to feed outside the cage and it doesnt seem to interested in the food. I understand you need to be persistant but how long do you leave yours in the feeding bin before giving up. Heres the pic and thanks for the help.

Hey there,

You've definitely got a Columbian. While I'm not experienced with them myself, I hear they can be a little more difficult to tame and work with. I'm sure someone here will chime in with how they work with theirs :)

Give him some time to settle in. What are you trying to feed?

Get some crickets, roaches, pinky mice, ground turkey.

You can feed in the cage to let him get acclimated. Just stay away from anything that moves and can get into the substrate. For in the cage feeding use ground turkey and pinkies.

Everyone says they are so vicious and hard to tame, don't get too discouraged (yet) I have had one for 6 months now, it is very sweet and has never tried to bite me. I do not feed him in the cage, just started by leaving my hand in the tank, while it walks around, now he climbs on my hand when I lower it in, I let him rest on my arm for a little while then put him in the feeding container. Mine loves pinkies (i feed 2 twice a week) loves the turkey mixture from this site, and eats eggs like crazy, I feed some crickets, but he won't touch a super worm. Just work with yours EVERYDAY, the first week or two when I got mine, he was a little huffy, but would stop as soon as I picked him up. Also remember not to dig them up, wait for them to come out, it helps to build trust. It will be so rewarding the day when you take him out, and he just stretches out his legs, hangs his tail and rests his head on ur arm and falls asleep! and cute too! Good luck, and be sure to read all the info on the colombian forum!

Well after posting this initially, I took the advice I got and left him alone for a few days. I feed him some ground turkey, he took maybe 5-6 bites of it and then he was finished. I tried turkey again today and nothing. But he is also in shed pretty good, could this be part of the problem? I know some snakes wont eat while in shed, do tegus sometimes turn down food while in shed?

shedding really hasnt been a issue as far as mine goes and his actions, but some days hes got a big appetite... and some days he doesnt. I still always keep variety coming. sometimes my guy just isnt hungry. but if I bring him the same thing next week he just might eat it all up. one of the coolest lizards ive come into to contact with was a Columbian, he had a personality just like my b/W, i think alot of it has to do with luck of the draw, proper attention and care. are the odds greater that your Columbian will be a little more fiesty? yes but with the proper care he might just be as tame as a puppy, best of luck Puckett26! ;)
