Hi there! I am new here. I am expecting a new tegu on Friday morning and I'm just really anxious to get her here and kinda nervous because I want to make sure I'm getting her from a good place and I want to know that I have everything ready. We have an enclosure for her, not sure the exact dimensions but it's a converted 125 gallon tank. Have the cypress mulch, heat bulbs, and food. We've had iguanas and water dragons. I have never bought an animal online so maybe that's what I'm worried about??!! I'm just stressing! They were old enough to ship yesterday so what should I start out the diet as?? I'm sure that just sounded like rambling I'm just nervous!!! Thanks for any advice!

Where did you buy the tegu at this time of the year? Is it a yearling or a hatchling? Because im looking for one as of right now too

Do not feed pinkies often as they have little to no nutritional value. I would stick with dubias and ground turkey.

Pinkies will have more nutritional value than ground turkey. Dubias and the biggest mice they can take.

so the dubias are smaller than pinkies??? I guess I'm confused. I've never fed my lizards mice before. the biggest thing they've had are the big roaches.

A hatchling is likely to be around a foot nose to tail. The 2012 babies are not quite a year yet but they would vary in size. Some members have 2012s (summer/fall) that are a foot and a half to 2 feet in length.

There are tons of threads about diet on this forum, I'm sure if you searched around you could find some awesome care info. I think pinkies are fine to feed, my girl had a lot of pinkies, roaches and snails etc. and she's doing great on fuzzies and other meats/fruits right now. I think variety is important and as long as you make sure your tegu gets enough protein and calcium it should be fine.
The first post on this thread is pretty helpful, at least it was for me.

Be sure you do lots of research! When she gets bigger you'll probably want to switch from the converted tank (which I hope holds humidity very well and does not have mesh wiring on top as that will reduce the UV your tegu will get) to a 6'3'3 or bigger enclosure. Good luck, I hope to see pics when you get her!!!
