Hi, we have a 3 years old black and white Tegu named Walter. We are hoping that someone can relate to our problem. Walter has not been flicking his tongue for several weeks. We took him to the vet here locally and they told us to change his diet by adding whole mice. We did that and he still wasn't flicking his tongue. So we took him to a vet a couple of hours away that specialized in reptiles and he sedated him and said his tongue was coiled up in the back of his mouth and he pulled it out with forceps and it was fine. He did well last night and this morning and now he's not flicking his tongue again. We can see his tongue coiled up a little on the left side of his mouth when we fed him tonight. Not sure what to do or if anyone else has see this. We are willing to try recommendations because paying for expensive vet visits has not helped.

Welcome to the forum! Yowch having your tongue checked with forceps sounds awful. How're your environmental parameters? Heat and humidity are high enough? Have you given any baths?

He does get regular baths, maybe we need to increase the humidity though. We keep his enclosure at the recommended temps too.

How's the diet overall? How much calcium/multivitamin is he getting? Basking spot should be around 120-125 for that age
There are a lot of "recommended temps" found on the internet in care sheets or given out by pet stores and some of them are incorrect or can be off for certain ages as they'll change as a tegu grows in size. People on here have posted in the past that they have "the correct temps" and then later post what they are and they're off, so its never a bad idea to post as much information as possible about care and setups when trying to diagnose an issue

Hey there. I know it's been a few years but did you ever get this problem figured out?

My wife and I are having a similar experience with our B/W tegu.
We have a 3 year old male b/w tegu and he very rarely sticks his tongue out. Usually just the tip. He is mega chill because we have raised him from a hatching.

Enclosure is 8'x3'x3'
Daily interactions. Baths 2 to 3 times a week. Diet is good. Eating is great. Drinking, pooping, shedding, temperament... All fantastic.
Basking spot is roughly 120f
Humidity and heat are monitored by a controller. Humidity is held between 75% and 88%. Temp gradient is between 85f and 75f.

He might just be that relaxed and comfortable that he simply doesn't flick his tongue much but I just thought I'd check in with your post.

Thanks
Jamz
