Sorry guys but I Have a new tegu and I am green as it comes ..Ive read over the course of a week Many posts and have learned a great deal . I know there is no good answer to the bedding problem. I live a hundred miles from the nearest thing that you would call a town . I underestimated the problem finding Cyprus mulch . Right now Tegzilla [a hatch-ling ] is on news papers flat on the bottom and torn up like you do ..I have lots of hay and I found a post that said he used that ... What would be better news papers or hay ??? Dumb question I know but you gotta make them..

How are you keeping the humidity up? I'm not sure about the hay but newspaper should be fine. Your biggest concern should be the moisture. That's why they say to use Cyprus mulch. Im sure you can order everything online. Try to get Eco earth or jungle mix. They hold the most moisture (I think). That's my opinion im sure you'll get 2o different answers lol.

Thanks I guess i`ll have to bite the bullet and order those little bags It would still be a week away tho. Ive only had him since yesterday and he only comes out of his cave for maybe an hour .He didn't eat yesterday but ate a little today .Went for the turkey and the plumb . I think he is hibernating from what I have read.I keep it wet with a sprayer at 60 to 70 percent it is bother like you would think .. Wet hay doesn't hold up well at all I do know from outside animals...Say I was to get the Cyprus and the critter was hibernating in the news papers .. Would you just dig him up then tuck him away when you were done changing the mulch .. ?? Is deer and elk liver a replacement for beef ??

Hay will work... But as you know it doesn't hld up well to moisture. It will begin to biodegrade quickly and is also prone to mold/mildew. It can however be mixed with soil and be used in outdoor enclosures (extra fresh air), which is likely the situation you read abotu someone using it.

Newspaper will work also. It's not the best for burrowing, but it can work.

Cypress mulch is best, but isn't readily available to everyone.

Coco Husk and other reptile substrates work fine but get expensive quick. As hatchlings, I think some of them are a great idea as a hatchlings enclosure is likely smaller thus needing less substrate. Also the smaller substrate is less of a risk of causing impaction if it happens to be eaten.
