Its not that you can't have one in the states it just that Aussie law won't allow for them to exported. I think there are a few in private ownership in euopre but i have not met anyone that has any in the US let alone breeding.
Frank Retes does not have any to my knowledge, and yeah Dallas Zoo I believe but they never found a date for her and I think she passed away or is really old.
you might be able to get a lace monitor. expensive though. also if i'm not mistaken, a bite from them can be nasty. similar to that of a komodo as far as a mean infection by way of the saliva. but a good looking monitor.
