Hi All,
So I got my B&W June 30 and s/he has grown like a weed and is eating us out of house and home. Took about 2-3 weeks to trigger his feeding response but now there is no going back! So about 5 weeks ago I got a little Red that was only an inch or so smaller then my b&w so I went for it. Took her three weeks just to take food. She is very shy but shows no signs of aggression. She gets nervous and hides end of story. I leave her alone for the most part. About once a week I'll give her a bath with Dezie and she doesn't freak out, she is still skittish but I don't handle her too much as she hides about 80% of the time. I did think that maybe she was trying to hibernate as she never ate but after 3 weeks she finally took a pinkie from my tongs. That seems to be the only way she will eat. I can put food on a plate in her enclosure and she won't even go near it. She will eat maybe .5-.75 of a chicken heart out of the tongs every couple days. I have tried scrambled eggs, pinkies, ground turkey, beef liver, grapes, kiwiw, crickets, superworms, wax worms ( them she ate but again from the tongs). She doesn;t seem to have the spark for food that they should. Even when she enjoys the food like the chicken hearts she very gently takes it from the tongs and she is a very polite eater. I have tried putting cod liver oil in some foods but she won't even touch it that way. She doesn't look skinny just has not grown since I got her. She is now about 5 inches smaller then Dezie! I have been trying to feed her in the enclosure as bin feeding stressed her out way too much. Is this a Red thing or something I am doing wrong?? Like I said my other Tegu is doing great. My temps are pretty good, about 108-111 under the bask and about 79-84 in the cool end. They always have fresh water, I offer a humid box that I empty each week and add new peat moss and more water (she loves that box), they have 2 hides, they sleep nose to nose in the substrate so I don't think she is bothered by dezie being there. The humidity in the tank is consistantly at 65% unless I mist then it'll go up to about 80-90% for about an hour. The substrate is always damp/cool under the top layer.......
If she hibernates soon should I worry about her being able to handle the long cool down safely? Should I try to keep her from hibernating by not adjusting the lights?? I would really like the possibility of breeding down the road if I have both sexes but I am a little worried she won't be strong enough to hibernate her first season.
Any help I could get would be much appreciated, she is eating but very little. Enough to keep healthy I guess but not enough to thrive.
