I thought my basking temp was too low at 103 ish so i up the basking to 118 ish. Well he used to bask a lot more at the cooler temp, now he seems to utilize the basking area a lot less. Is 118-120 too hot??
I'm no expert by any means. But I recently got a Tegu and experimented with different basking temperatures.
My Tegu initially had a basking temp of 105 but after reading about how Tegu's enjoy anywhere from 110-120 basking temps I upped my her basking spot to 118ish (Like you).
directly around the basking spot, there are areas that are 95-105 degrees, so she has the option to bask in in a cooler spot if she likes. I see her utilize all these areas, even the 118 spot.
On the other side the temps gradually decrease down to 80 degrees on the very end of the cool side. She can also burrow underneath the substrate where it's even cooler (72-75ish).
If she's not basking somewhere near the hotspot, she usually burrows underneath the substrate. She is still young, so I'm assuming this is natural behavior and natural for them burrow as a species.
I think it's best to give them options and observe what they like.
Teigu, sounds like we have the exact same thing going on. My guy hangs around the direct basking spot which hangs around 100 to 105 and then she will go on and off the spot that reads 120. Thanks Bubbtz, that's what i was thinking.
