my new tegu (blizard) isnt eating i got him last week and he only ate a little bit.i though he was going into hibernation but he comes out to bask every so often.any advice?
According to many experienced owners on the forum, Argentine tegus will usually stop feeding for a few weeks before they actually go down, but they will still bask for short periods during that time. They have to clear any waste from their digestive tracts, and, of course, basking is part of that process.
At this time of year, your little guy was likely already slowing down or hibernating before he came to you. Honestly, I wouldn't worry! You can continue to offer food as long as he comes out to bask, but don't fret if he doesn't take any--especially if his activity continues to slow down.
If you read through the forums recent threads, you will find many other threads with people experiencing the exact same thing. I'm not pointing this out to discourage you from making your own thread, but to give you assurance you are not alone and to give you the chance to read responses to those similar situations....
