Tegu ban question

So, many of you probably already know that Iguanas and Tegus will definitely be banned by July 1st in Florida. The governor would just have to sign it. But as of now they are legal to buy ofc. I have been doing a lot of research like the past 6 months of Tegus. If I were to buy a Tegu lets just say from UGR as an example. Will they know? And what are the current owners of Tegus and Iguana owners in Florida going to do? Sorry if its a stupid question I just want opinions if its worth it before making a purchase and setting up an enclosure. And I'm new here hello! But if a vet was needed that would be a oh sh*t moment I feel... Damn it lol.

It will severely harm the industry and the hobby in FL. It makes possessing, breeding, and selling those species illegal. Breeders that currently have permits will still be allowed to operate but only allowed to sell animals to states outside of FL.

I've read that they are working on creating grandfather permits for personal pets that you can obtain once the bill passes "“FWC will be working on rules that will address a lot of the concerns, including grandfathering in pets,” Mayfield said. “They’re not going to go out and start taking pets away from people.”" However, I haven't been able to find a lot of info on that. It's a very scary time to be a reptile enthusiast in FL.... You could try to get one before the ban goes into effect, and hope that these grandfather permits are a.) going to actually happen and b.) that you can get one.

Also: "will they know" - Probably not. But it's really not a good idea to persue in my opinion. If you are ever exposed, violating laws like this can have severe consequences, not to mention you may lose your beloved family member. It's really not worth it.

Right, I do plan on moving out of Florida in the near future anyway so. Anyway the politicians don't care about the issue though thats for sure its all about power and politics :( but who knows this type of law may go further out throughout the country sadly.

On the bright side, if you wait you won't have to worry about hauling a 8x4x4 enclosure with you :p

Lol that is true. And speaking of the 8x4x4 do you really need to spend extra money to put a baby tegu in a small enclosure to start out? or could you just put he or she in a adult enclosure right off? Will the baby feel "overwhelmed" cause I hear that a lot.

Grow Tents are great and low cost if you need something temporary (and come in all sizes). I've heard of people keeping them in those permanently but I'm less trusting of using them as an adult enclosure... read one instance where the tegu dug/ripped the fabric and escaped.

Lots of people start slow with a smaller enclosure than the final 8x4x4 goal ...and I moved an enclosure that big and almost lost my mind. Only thing is - they grow fast especially if they are male.

Not ever having raised one from hatchling, I'm curious what others have found. Years back someone asked. Seemed to me at the time that a partition in the adult enclosure might provide the little one with more security, but only speculative.

I personally don't see a problem in going straight into an adult enclosure .....But if that was the way I was going to go, I would like Walter says have some idea of how to create a partition to section some off just incase.
