How long to typical breeders hold onto the hatchlings before they start to ship them out? Puppies are usually held for about 8 weeks so how long are tegus supposed to be kept until selling them?
I don't know that there's a general rule like there is for puppies. The best breeders will keep hatchlings until they're started on a healthy diet and clearly thriving before shipping them out. Ask around and see what the consensus is at different breeders. Some will try to get them out ASAP - probably not the best idea...
I think a week or two should be enough. Puppies are held back because they need time to be weaned and get the first set of vaccinations whereas a tegu comes out of the egg self sufficient, a breeder should keep them for a bit to ensure they're settling in and feeding and growing properly but after that should be good.
