hi people. iv had my tegu a year now and if the guy i bought it from was right he's coming up for 2 years old and is only 26 inches long. From what iv read here thats really small, apart from picky times he eats like a trooper, has all the right powders, cod liver oil and a good varied diet. Also he sheds regularly aswell so does anyone have any ideas why he isnt so big or does this happen?

There's no way a 2 yr old tegu should be only 26 inches long. Even if it hibernated both years. Are you sure of what kind and the age of the tegu you have? Very few yearlings that hibernate their first year are that small.

Post some pics and lets see whatcha got.

^Yup, Tegus are born in late summer. In the Northern Hemisphere that is July... in the Southern Hemisphere that is January... So you either have a 1.5 year old 'locally' bred Tegu, or you have a 2 year old imported Tegu.

I think 26" would be slightly small for a 1.5 year old female, but not small enough to cause concern.

It's ENTIRELY POSSIBLE that this tegu is as old as you say it is and is as small as you say it is...ENTIRELY POSSIBLE...and it wouldn't be an issue:

If your tegu was born in June or July of 2009 and went into hibernation from say August to Feb or March of 2010 and then went back down into hibernation in August of 2010 and just recently came up, it's totally possible...

But, of course, I don't know how much it's hibernated. It'd definitely be on the smaller side and wouldn't necessarily have something wrong with it.

I'm not saying that what I'm saying is what happened, but it is a possibility.
