Hey guys, was just wondering if any of you would know why my lil goliath here is hyperventilating? It happens everytime i take him out of his tank or when he squirms to get out of my hands while im handling him. Hopefully someone has an answer.

Thanks
Zack

relax zach your good! Its more than likely not hyperventilating.... but instead "puffing at you" or saying leave me alone!!!!!! This is a natural reaction when a tegu of any species does not want to be held or taken from their hide/burrow. My columbian does this on a regular basis. She has a decent attitude but will never bite when she "puffs". Other Tegu's may deliver a bite but if their handled on the regular i doubt it.... This may be something she/he will do forever, but some grow out of it unless their having a bad day......

Best Wishes Bdiz

Hey mate thanks for the reply, was really worried as i'm new to keeping tegu's. Actually only 2 weeks up to date now, haha. Cause i do read you need to handle them everyday or they'll be super aggresive next time.

Thanks
Zack

You don't need to handle them every day. Disturbing them when they don't want to be disturbed can actually set you back in the taming process as it diminishes some of the trust you've worked to gain through calm, repetitive handling. Tegus are incredibly smart lizards and they will remember being handled roughly or woken up from their peaceful sleep.

Mine breathes heavy but not in a puffing way.. he likes to cuddle and be held but just breathes heavier than the other..?

Ah i see, thanks for all your replies. Really helps. I try not to disturb him while he's in his hide but when i do need to feed him, i don't really have a choice, he's only out for basking in the morning for about an hour and then he's back into his hide.

Thanks

I sure get a kick out of my female, she is so darn cute but oh buddy, she has a personality and when she isn't in a good mood the whole house knows it! She Huff's a lot when she is grumpy, bounces her butt in the air but it sure is cute. These are incredibly smart animals, this being the primary reason that they have survived for millions of years.
Have fun
