In Argentina the average temp is in the summer around 77 and the winter as low as 38. So why do people think they need such high temps? And the low side to be so high. Bobby told me they do fine at night if its in the 50's. I know they have burrows in the wild that keep them warmer in the winter. But the summer temps makes me wonder.

That is why they hibernate in the winter. Basking temps will still get into the 100's in Argentina even with temps in the high 70's, low 80's. That is also why you need a cool side of 75.

So the rocks are warmer than the ambient temp? So if our weather was more consistant, it would be perfect for outdoor enclosures. So long as they could burrow deep enough to stay warm. Washingtons weather is for the most part the same. We need more humidity.

i dont think ambient temps on the hot side are important at all, the cool side has to be cool though so they can cool down and not overheat, there is a thread from bobby when the site started that urged people not to use 10 gallon tanks cause peoples tegus were dying cause there was no cool side to go to
