'Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the house
Not a snakey was stirring
nor eating a mouse.
The snake hooks were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. 'Tic-olas soon would be there.
The carpets were sleeping and done with their sheds
While Vision cage fantasies danced in their heads.
The Ball in his hide box, at last shed his eyecap
And had just settled down for a long winter's nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
My corn struck the cage wondering what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
almost tripped on a heat lamp and threw open the sash,
When to what should my wondering eyes now awake
But a miniature sleigh pulled by eight tiny snakes.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it must be St. 'Tic.
More rapid than Mambas his coursers they came
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name-
"On Hypo! On, Moonglow! Now, Spider and Mojo!
On Tiger! On Motley! On Jungle and Sunglow!
To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall
now crawl away, crawl away, crawl away all!
So up to the housetop the snakeys they flew
With the sleigh full of goodies, and St. 'Tic-olas too.
And then in a twinkling, I heard on the rail
The soft little slither of each little scale.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. 'Tic-olas came with a bound.
He was all irridescent, from his nose to his vent
and his scales were all shiny with blue-greenish tint
A bundle of goods he had flung on his back
And he looked like a 10 footer, his length had no lack
His eyes they were orange, his heat pits so merry
His jaws were quite large and his teeth rather scary
His droll little mouth had a smile just for show
And the scales of his chin were as white as the snow
He had a broad head and a little round belly
Inside was the neighbor's poor white rabbit Nelly
He was chubby and plump, a right satisfied herp
And I laughed when I saw him, for he let out a burp
A flick of his tongue and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread
He spoke not a word, but went straight to the tree
and left there a few fed ex boxes for me.
And laying his tail alongside of his nose,
and giving a nod up the chimney he rose
Slithered up to his sleigh, to his team gave a hiss
and away they all flew like a will o' the wisp
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
Happy Herping to all, and to all a good night!
