Hopping on the wagon and making my gu an official thread for pic/video/taming/life in general updates. :)

I got my baby 4 days ago at a reptile shop in Tigard OR. I have a feeling he wasn't handled very well as he is skittish as hell to the point where the contact will be very minimal for a while until he acclimates and gets used to me. He hasn't been sexed yet (they didn't really even know his age but I'm guessing 8-ish weeks) but for ease I will refer to him as a he until I learn any better.

Right now I am trying my best to give him space. Today I stuck my hand in the tank and left on the substrate for about 25 min. He was dozing off while I did it. Unfortunately he has now associated napkins with his food (he charged me when I tried to pick up his poop with a napkin) so now I've moved on to wearing gloves when I do anything with this food. Unfortunately he wakes up really early so I can't feed him before he sees me. I might wait until nighttime but I don't like the thought of leaving him unsupervised with his food as he's dragged it through substrate before. I'm hoping really soon I can bond enough to where he'll let me touch/hold him so I can begin bin feeding as I really do not like the risk of enclosure feeding.

He has been a little more curious the last couple of days. I like to sit in front of the tank and pretend to sleep. He's been coming up to the glass to try and lick at me. Seems like a little bit of progress. :)

Unfortunately I will be moving from OR back to Louisiana in about 2 and a half weeks. I will be upgrading his enclosure to a 40g (or larger) breeder while I work on his permanent enclosure. Does anyone have tips on shipping methods? I'm having my friend do it once I get settled in and have all of his stuff ready and the temp/humidity correct again. I really don't want to do this since it will probably cause a big taming setback, but there's no getting around it.

Try feeding him with tongs. It helps him associate you as a provider of good things, gets your hands closer, and allows you to control where he is being fed in the enclosure.

If he's scared of the tongs at first, try leaving them in there with a small piece of food on them, a couple times. Items such as crickets or pinkies work well. When they see the tongs as a source of food, you can begin offering tongs in your hands.

By the way - He's very cute. Reminds me of my Tegu! Similar size, coloration... Just be patient with the taming. They'll start to come around.

Thanks for the tips Murk. :) I have been giving him a few crickets with tongs a day. I might switch to just doing that if he keeps dragging meat through the substrate, just until I can bin feed at least. He doesn't seem afraid of the tongs either, so that's good!

And thank you! :)
