Oooooh, this is actually my first tegu so I have no idea! Hopefully one of the experienced keepers can chime in.

If you don't substantially (albeit gradually) reduce a snake's temperatures and light cycle, it doesn't brumate. Some snakes won't breed succesfully without brumating, some snakes don't seem to mind.

Thanks so much for that info!!! I'm used to breeding snakes and I am most definitely the one who decides whether or not they're brumating. So far my girl doesn't seem overly inclined to hibernate so I'll keep a close eye on her eating/sleeping behaviour and go from there. You've eased some...

If I AM going to breed her (albeit not this year or next but the year after) then should I still 'put her under'?

So, my new baby is approximtely one year old and I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to hibernate him/her. Anyway, the research I've done indicates that hibernation is more important for a female than a male and being as I just got the little monster I selfishly don't want him/her to go...

    Blue tegu on Kingsnake

I know I'm really new at this but it almost looks like he's missing a lot of his, well, face! I'd be grumpy too if that were the case.

    Soooooo Excited!!!!!!

No worries. Since he needs to come out of his enclosure on a near daily basis to be fed not to mention the fact that I love just chilling with him, he'll never be a 'look at' reptile. I have some of those (nasty rat snake, anyone?) and they're great but I prefer the animals I can actually...

    Canadian Breeders?

I apologize if there are already other threads dealing with the existence of Canadian breeders (the search function yields no results) but I'm really interested in tracking one down. Eventually I'm going to want a girlfriend for my 'little' man and I'd rather not buy from a pet store. Thanks...

    How Old?

Awesome! That clear things up considerably! So if a non-hibernated tegu is an adult at approximately 18-24 months it's probably safe to say that a hibernated tegu reaches adulthood at approximately 24-30 months but has its entire lifespan to reach its potential maximum size? My guy is a fair...

    How Old?

Hi guys, I'm finding lots of info. regaring growth rates, sexing, etc. but no information so far on how old a tegu is when it is said to be 'full grown'. I know my yearling male definitely has some more growing to do but will he grow until he's eighteen months, two years, three years, five...
