    The start of Taming

Agree with the many folks here! Digging them out is definitely not the best idea, and a slower more patient approach will likely do you good! Also since age of the tegu is unsure, beware of Guberty, which occures (around 8 to 10 months of age typically)! Even if you get him super calm, they may...

    In need of help!

What are the conditions of the enclosure (humidity, overall heat, basking heat)? Does the basking area have uva/uvb? And how long have you been taking care of them? It is possible they may just be entering brumation

    Winter Enclosure

I haven’t had any problems with shedding too much actually! Not since some minor changes were made. in addition to some fish oil, feeding him actual fish and varied diet has really helped with the shed. I also keep rough items around for him to rub against. I used to check his toes near...

Problems with my three month old tegu

Hello! If your doing everything right, than I got two guess. One is getting ready for or is Brumating - as everything you mentioned in terms of behavior sounds like it. The other guess is the genetic lottery. You may just have a tegu who is simply smaller than the rest.

    Winter Enclosure

Hello Everyone! I am looking for a general consensus. After the temperatures got hot enough (70+ days regularly), I let my tegu Amigo free roam my room basically forever. During that time he definitely grew out of his old enclosure, and it strictly a basking/humidity house now, as he enters...

    Shedding and skin problems.

Although that is great to hear for you, I must STRONGLY caution against the use of coconut oil. From what I understand it cooks your tegu, well badly burn them. While I have not experienced this myself, another user has. Here is a link to the relevant post...

    Shedding and skin problems.

While your within the range, it is on the low end - I would try to aim for closer 80% humidty. Optionally, instead of trying to have the WHOLE tank be that, you can put some soaked moss into his hide to raise the humidty in there. Other options include fish oil or fish in general. Putting some...

    Leash training?/Sexing

He/She might be a bit too young to tell at the moment. But one way to possibly tell, is to just take a moment to watch him poop. Some males will let out their heimepenis while pooping before drawing them back in. Though this might not help if he still too young

Have a bowl of water out near where likes to be. That should be sufficent, if he wants to drink, he will. Just make sure to change the water as needed

    From passive to active taming?

Been a real long time since I made this thread. Figured an update would be good. I got amigo when he was a hatchling, and now he is a big maybe 3 foot monster :D And wouldn't trade him for the world. I had continued with the more passive approach, and though it took some time, it has really...

    Questions, questions and questions

Age wise - from what I understand, 10 inches is about hatchling size. So he could have possibly been born in march. As long as the big enclosure has plenty of hiding spots or enough space to burrow, he/she should feel pretty secure. As for wake, poo, go back to bed, could potentially be...

    My tegu won't eat

I think I seen a similar thread on this. I think the general consensus is simply to keep. giving them food, as they may just be a bit shy/cautious due to new surroundings. I would also suggest checking the temperature of his basking spot if you can. Are the insects alive? And finally...this is...

    From passive to active taming?

Amigo is a baby...I think. Is 4 months old still a baby for Tegus? XD And indeed, he has done nothing to make me afraid of him. At most he hisses sometimes when I pet him, but never makes to run away (now), bite or whip. I tend to back off when he does this, as so far my experience with him...

    From passive to active taming?

Hey folks! I wasn't sure how else to word this thread title, so pardon if it sounds odd. Amigo, my red argentine tegu, is doing quite well. While he can still become startled and jump/dash, he is generally chill. However, due to changes in schedule for work (more shifts for the holiday...

    Handfeeding

My own guy Amigo also seems to prefer hand feeding and even willing to try new foods! So similar boat. However he has bitten me a total of 3 times. The first two was when feeding bugs - he goes NUTS for mealworms, I don't hand feed them those, only tongs. Larger fellas like hornorms I will. The...
