Lizards suitable as a "mini tegu"?

Sorry about taking so long to respond. I constantly hear mixed reports on the fire skinks diet. Some claim that they can be fed high-quality cat food, though I personally doubt that since tegu's themselves can't be sustained on that. Everything else about the fire skink looks golden to...

    Tegus and Skinks

Skinks and tegus are more closely related to each other than they are to monitors anyway. Honestly, a big tegu looks more like a skink to me than some of the actual skinks do. I would never have guessed that Blue Tongues and the red-eye croc skink were actual skinks unless someone told me.

Lizards suitable as a "mini tegu"?

I have. For some reason I can't bring myself to really want one. IDK, it may be because they always have a little grimace on their face and look perpetually displeased. I know that's just me being anthropomorphic, but one thing that I really liked about the tegu [and I really like about...

Lizards suitable as a "mini tegu"?

Hello everyone! I am in search of a small, 1ft-2ft lizard which has similar care requirements as a tegu. I'll provide a bit of back story later. Specifically, I'm searching for an animal that can be raised primarily on the "tegu diet" [heavily based on vitamin/calcium fortified ground...

    Harness and pet stroller recommendation?

This is late in coming, but tank you all for your suggestions! I plan on buying something within the next couple of days.

    Harness and pet stroller recommendation?

Hello everyone! I was recently reading a thread about people taking their reptiles with them outside in pet carriers, strollers, harnesses, and so on. None of them actually mentioned which brand or model they use though. I would like to do something similar for my tegu, as he seems to be bored...

    Tegu endothermy?

Hello everyone! I have a quick question for all of you. Do tegu's generate some of their own body heat? I know this sounds like a really obvious question, but there's a reason I'm bringing this up. First, some back story. My Tegu [Taco] is currently living with me in my college apartment...

    Black nose tegu?!?

I got a regular arg. tegu from Bobby, but he looks a lot like a black nose male :P Speaking of which, do black noses ever get rid of the brown color on their backs? Taco is over 2 years old now and, aside from the brown/dark coloration on his head, he still has juvenile-looking color patterns.

is it to early for start of hibernation?

My tegu seems to be slowing down his appetite a bit, but still has a regular sleep schedule. I really hope it isn't hibernation this early!

    First Chicks

I can usually tell how much Taco likes his food based on how much time he spends NOT eating it. When I fed him pinkies last week (because my rubber boa wasn't hungry and I had to get rid of them) he spent about 3 minutes ripping them in half and drawing on the sides of his feeding bin with their...

    Tegu or Sav. Monitor???

I've also heard that Sav monitors actually have a specialist diet and should only ever eat inverts (or at least don't feed it mice often). Apparently in the wild they almost never eat mammals, even if they're available to them. When a Sav monitor is fed too many rodents it usually suffers from...

    Is my tegu small?

Ahh, that's re-assuring. I was afraid Taco was undersized/underweight and I wasn't taking good care of him. I will try to get some reasonably accurate measurements tomorrow (he's sleeping now). I'd say he's somewhere between 2 and 3 feet long though. And I'm sorry, but the Pac-Man machine has...

    Is my tegu small?

Hello everyone! I've been checking out pictures of other people's yearling tegu's and I've noticed that a lot of them are... big. I first got Taco about... a year ago. Maybe give or take a week He was a little over a month old at that point. In about October he started going into a hibernation...

    Tegu Bites

My Tegu has calmed down a lot since his puberty stage, I think. I really haven't given him the chance to prove himself, but he certainly doesn't throw a fuss when I touch or pick him up. ..actually in that regard he's actually a lot like his pre-puberty self. He did bite me a few months ago...

    Sleep?

Taco has odd sleep patterns. When I first got him, he usually pulled a good 12pm-10pm shift (rather like myself), which worked out perfectly. Before going into hibernation he would usually only be awake for a few hours each day (and often those hours would be during my classes, so I wouldn't see...
