I don't feed live but yeah,.. they love chicks more so than rats and quail for mine. Even more than chicks,.. rabbit. But too many chicks can give them mud butt.

I don't see why not. Just kill them first as not stress out the feeder animals . I sometimes go down to the Halal market and get the birds they don't think are "HALAL" enough to be slaughtered for market and get them at dirt prices. I also get the innards and heads from the animals that have been slaughtered as well for like 10 dollars for a five gallon bucket. The best time to go is on Saturday because that is the day they are the most busy. . Plus they don't want to pay the trash man to take it away so they will sell you all of it if they could.

OOOH! thanks Bubblz!!! Spartacus has been having the squirts and I really couldn't figure out why, temps are fine, humidity is fine, but I have been giving him a chick every week! I'm guessing this is why he has mud butt?
makes sense to me, he never had this problem before.

Put a chunk of dry ice in a sealable bucket. Leave it sealed for a few minutes to let the co2 gather at the bottom and put the chicks in and put the lid on the bucket. The chicks will be unconcious within a minute and dead in another. They don't feel any pain or discomfort. That is the way or at least is simular to how the big rodent providers kill theirs. I think they use bottled co2.

Not a problem,.. I hope that's it for Spartacus since it's any easy fix. When ever chicks are on the menu for mine they're offered with something else. It's pretty much the same with too much of any meaty meals with out whole prey after a while, especially poultry.

To the Op and Dragonmetalhead I've never tried it but I don't think they actually come into contact with the Hot Ice. There's different ways to do it but you can put the DI in a separate container with little holes in it. Place that container into the bucket and then the animals so there's no contact.

You can buy DI at some Publix stores, Penguin Ice, or run a Google Search for a local provider. Since DI can be $$, buy a number of chicks, euthanize, then freeze.
