Which monitor to choose?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering getting a medium (kinda) sized monitor lizard. I have experience with other big reptiles but this would be my first monitor (I know many recommend the ackie as a first monitor, but I really don't like it)

The types of monitor that I'm considering are:

  • Argus monitor
  • Yellow headed water monitor
  • Dumeril's monitor

I like the first two more in looks, but I have read that Dumerils are rarely bitey and that is a plus.
Is there any main difference in temperament between the Argus and the Yellow headed? Which one is more trainable/intelligent? Which one can enjoy more handling or is more easily tamed? Is the Argus more feisty?

My favorite is the Argus but I want to contrast these 3 monitors before I make my final decision.

Thank you!!

I would opt for the one that you have the most resources for care and training. This would include a breeder, veterinarian, and food source at a minimum. If you personally know someone who can help you with the animal that would be ideal. Someone who has first hand experience with them themselves.

Thank you! I have trustworthy veterinarians and a friend who is advising me in the different species, but unfortunately I don't have anyone close that I can see the monitors live, only online

I've had a Savanah and a Nile and by far the Nile was my favorite..had him over 10 years in a 100 gallon which was set up with bricks along the back for land then filled with water..it was great watching him chase and catch fish through the water..in his later years he was calm enough to pick up and hold for a bit..he was awesome..I'd go with the yellow headed water monitor if I was choosing...
