please, please, please, please, please......why do people keep showing us pictures of the "direct on from underneath shot of the cloaca"?!?!?!? I get that many think this is the shot that will readily help us determine the sex, but it really, really, really isn't. This is akin to showing us a portrait shot of yourself (ie. facing forward like in a passport photo) and asking us if your ears are dirty. While sometimes we have been able to determine sex from such a photo, it is by luck of an angle and posture of pose than it is by being skilled and seeing accurately. Just as the ears on your head are located on the SIDE of your head (and therefore determining if your ears are clean is more appropriately done by a shot OF THE EAR instead of the FACE, even though a shot of the face shows the ears), the region (that needs to be in focus) is basically to either SIDE of the cloaca, with the skin stretched (best by fully extending the leg forward) so that the region isn't all folded and bunched up (we're looking for little scale differences, not beans'n'franks or tacos). So turn your head, pull your hair away from the ear, and make sure the shot is in focus to see whether that's a mole on your concha or a spot of earwax....

Here is a link to a photo that member chriswizz posted a few years ago with circles clearly showing the proper area that we need to see for sexing. Notice that these areas are anterior to and on the peripheries of the cloaca. What we are looking at are those really small scales within those circles, that indicates a male (as Roadkill has had to explain so many times before). The tegu in the photo has his legs spread out to show those areas clearly, which means pulling them slightly toward the abdomen and a bit toward the back, so there is no skin bunching up. We don't need to see the tail or even 2 cm anterior of the cloaca so get in nice and close. We also don't need a straight on shot to see both sides of the cloaca, one side would do and you can get better focused in that way. Basically a straight on shot of one of the circled areas with no skin bunching up and we should be able to sex it. Remember that these small scales are hard to make out if the photo is too bright, you need some shadow to see them clearly.
