The cat can't break through the plexiglas so that shouldn't worry you. When I have Gordo out, no other animals are in the same room. It is just too great a risk. I wouldn't expect the cat to accept your Tegu and vice versa. If the cat was a part of your household first, it's behavior is natural. I don't know how old or large your Tegu is but a little one is just prey for the cat, a meal if you will.
Recognize that and you will be fine. Having said that, Gordo is pretty large and one of my cats got through an unsecured bathroom door while I was watching Gordo bathe. Gordo got out of the tub and did his aggressive posture, mouth open, hissing and teeth bared. It scared the hell out of both me and the cat which turned tail and ran. After the cat was gone and the door closed, Gordo climbed into my lap and up onto my chest and forgot all about it.

I think just "keeping them away from each other" won't work as a healthy, long term solution. I was lucky enough to have my dog get along with all of my animals, but cats are different. The independent predators that they are, it only makes sense that it would be interested in the creature in his territory. I do a lot of research and have had to deal with my own cats a couple times, my suggestion that seems to always work with repetition is this:
If you have a small pen or room, allow the tegu to roam in that area, get its smell all over everything! Next, with the tegu OUT of that space, allow the cat to wander around inside and acclimate to the scent. Cats are very scent reliant, and may mark this area with the scent glands in their cheeks. Rinse and repeat.
Another thing that may cause feline anxiety is being too low to the ground. I doubt this though, the cat's behavior seems more curious/territorial than defensive. The best solution to this is adding cat platforms or trees allowing them to get around their favorite room without touching the ground. The idea behind this is that they can survey their territory and be comfortable with the addition.
I apologize if this doesn't work, all I can say from that is consistency and repetition, as with training any animal. I'm no professional cat person, this is just stuff that's worked for me and others coming from a cat trainer. It is sort of a "this guy said..." thing, but that's all I can give and back up with personal experience. Good luck! :)

Sorry for the length btw!

Cats are naturally curious and he's probably attracted by your GU's movements. Unless the cat gets some respect/fear for the GU this behavior will likely continue. You have 4 alternatives as far as I can figure:

1) get rid of the cat
2) get rid of the tegu
3) keep the separated(barriers)
4) train the cat to stay away(super soaker)

Definitely put the cat up whenever the tegu is out. It is sort of that long term solution. I have two ferrets and a cat. I put the cat up when the ferrets are out. Have a spray bottle on hand with a stream setting. When the cat hangs around the tegu enclosure, spray him once or twice. He'll get a negative association with the enclosure and stay away. Unfortunately, you're not going to be able to train the cat to leave the tegu alone and free roam together without a lot of knowledge, patience, and time.

im not very knowledgeable about cats seeing as i dislike them with great intensity. but laurarlf has a good idea. although it wont stop the cat from going up to the tegu it might stop it from stressing the tegu out. our sugar gliders have a rep for getting along with cats and dogs. but since the tegu and cat are bound to fight its best to find something to separate them.

I had problem with the cat my kids brought home messing with my Gu's some years back. i was scared the Gu's were gonna kill the cat or the other way around.(cats are incredible hunters). So i came up with my own solution to remedy this . I put a drop of clove oil behind the shoulder blades of the gu's and the cat stayed the heck away from them .It might not be for everyone .But, that combined with the spray bottle should do the double whammy to keep the cat away .

That's a good idea! I wonder if that would work as a deterrent for other animals and keeping them area from other areas....hmmm.
