coconut husk safe?

I have always used coconut husk with all my reptiles due to the fact I believe it to be more safe to digest then sand. But putting crickets in with my two month old Tegu he goes nuts and does not watch what's going in his mouth. I think he's swallowing too much in my opinion but he shows lack of interest in crickets outside of the cage in the tub where I normally feed him. What should I do about this?
