Hello, name's Rayne. I have two baby columbian black tegus. I never meant to have two.
WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS --
I went to a reptile expo for a guy who wanted to purchase my gecko. I thought: if there were tegus there, I might get one... maybe.
So I walk into the expo with my P-O'd gecko. FIRST THING I SEE THERE are baby tegus. I wanted a very black/white one, looked like there was one or two like that. I decided I should get my gecko to her new home first, ENTER DRAMA, he doesn't want her, long story. So I do a quick scan to see if there are any more tegus, there's not, so I go back to the first booth by the door. What do I find? The last BRIGHT baby being purchased. Me = displeased. So I start picking through the remaining ones, holding them, etc. These babies are selling FAST, and in a bit of a panic I decide to buy the one I'm holding, as he seemed pretty chill, and had an interesting mark on the back of his/her neck (An "XD"). The downside being he was black with dark brown stripes, and not the black and white I'd initially wanted. OH WELL. +1 lizard instead of -1.
9 days later I walk into my local reptile store. What does he have? two LIGHT COLORED baby columbians. GAAH. I hold both of them, favoring the one with thicker bands. So...I bring in my first baby...and trade him away for the second.
I came back several times to see if someone bought him. Nope. All that time I felt soo bad I gave my baby away for another baby. (meanwhile I notice that third baby is getting meaner...)
Finally... I give in and bring my darker baby home, for $20 more than I paid, haha! Whatever, worth it. So now I have 2. (Skipping the part where I was freaked out I had 6 lizards suddenly,) I handle them every day, they are VERY nice for an animal people say are supposed to be aggressive. Never once have they been aggressive. I love them! Though that third baby still at the reptile shop is super aggressive and has since dropped his tail. Its amazing how a bit of handling every day can affect them.
Anyway, Striker and XD are my tegu kids. Striker is very good at being a tegu (basking, loving food, having that cute excited huff he does when its time to go to the eating tank). He got his name for the way he 'strikes' at his food. XD is a lot more reserved (probably because he was abandoned for a week oh god I am a horrible parent), I usually have to unearth him for feeding/handling time. But since he is more calm and easier to hold, everyone likes him more than squirmy Striker. Don't tell him that though.
Pics later.
