Having some feeding trouble

First Time Tegu

I have read in a couple topics on here that feeding only rodents as a baby is not a good idea, and to do it once or twice a week...I have a problem then. I have snack bag full of frozen turkey mixed with cod liver oil in the freezer but when I give it to him he takes a small bite everytime and thats it. If I give him a dead pinky he will eat it eventually (between 30min to an hour later). If I give him a live pinky he will eat it within 5 minutes.

My questions are, why is it not suggested to feed them pinkies only right now (other than for the sake of variety)? Also do you have any suggestions for something he/she may be more interested in as a staple diet atleast for now?

Also I know not to feed my tegu in the cage, does that also include crickets, or it is it ok to feed the crickets in the cage?

The idea is to feed them in a seperate enclosure, have the food item in the enclosure when you put him in. If he doesn't eat within a few minutes, he's not hungry, or hasn't digested his last meal properly.

Take him out and put him back in his regular house. Bobby Hill said its ok to feed crickets or even superworms in its enclosure.
