Held My First Hot

I held my first hot today at the vet clinic... she was a beautiful ridgenose rattlesnake that needed slugs removed from her ovarian tissue. Before you criticize me for being "too young" or "not experienced enough", let me say that I was under the supervision of Dr. Todd Driggers, the #1 herp vet in Arizona and a skilled snake handler. He walked me through every safety precaution imagineable to ensure the safety of me and the snake. I realize that I was using a three-finger viper grip instead of a knuckle grip, but she was still a little woozy from the isoflorane and wasn't liable to twist her head and tag my thumb.

These were taken during the surgery. I'm the one that's not scrubbed down because it was an emergency call and I didn't have time to change.

That is really cool!!!!

So, do you work at this clinic regularly? Is it a job shadow or something? Whatever it is, what a great opportunity!

Yep, it's kind of a job shadow. The cool thing is that Dr Driggers and the vet techs give me lessons in treatments and analyzing results, so he'll allow me to give second opinions on x-rays and check samples under the microscope, then point out what I missed. I already know gram staining, baytril dosing, xray taking, how to run bloodwork, etc etc etc. I'm learning so much that hopefully I'll be able to pass vet school no problem. Besides that, we see some amazing stuff. We treat tortoises, hot snakes, wallabies, toucans, macaws, parrots, monitors, big snakes, and gila monsters on a regular basis. It's amazing that Dr Driggers has allowed me to do this.

That's fantastic! I wish I had an opportunity like that. That will look great on your application into vet school too!
