Anyone ever had a hatchling tegu eating fruits or veggies? I read they don't, but i also read colombian tegu's don't either and i have seen plenty owners feed there fruits and veggies. So is that indeed a fact or varies from tegu to tegu?

Just really curious......:p

One of the local pet stores feed their hatchlings greens and fruits and they seem to eat them fine.

I think it mainly depends on what kind and how it's introduced into their diet. Since babies are still learning what they can as well as whats good to eat. It's easier to introduce them to knew foods. Early on their main priorities are survival and food to sustain as well as grow.

As they get bigger they no longer have to worry about too many predators so they can relax a bit. On top of that in captivity they can afford to be a little more picky.

Mine didn't take too well to veggies but fruit they were all over. I make sure it's ripe,.. the sweeter the better. When it's not ripe enough they either don't eat it or pick through it.

So to prevent that if the fruit's not ripe enough I add a little honey. Or cut it up a few days earlier, sometimes add a little sugar or honey and let it sit in the fridge.

I haven't had one that all out refuses to eat fruit yet.

Baby food was the only way I got guru to eat them when he was little. I'd mix it in with some eggs or put some on a mouse lol.

From what I know, they don't require veggies and fruits as babies they're more carnivorous.

Mine showed no interest in anything but meat for the first two years... For the last year or so he likes sweet fruits (grapes, cherries, mango) but isn't always in the mood for it. He hasn't shown any interest in vegetables.

My baby sipped a little orange jus I freshly made for myself....but only half a tea spoon, so far no luck with the other fruits/veggies

You know i was actually wondering about freshly squeezed juice on occasions, seems orange's are not to effective though, What other fruit would be good to juice for a hatchling?

Sorry for the late reply to my own thread (had a really busy day) and some of the sort of meaningless questions, as i said i'm just really curious and want my tegu's diet to be as varied as possible from a young age.

Really good theory, i'll make sure to try to introduce fruit as early as possible. This was really helpful!

Yeah i know its not a must when younger and even when they get older if the diet is we'll enough. What Baby food brand and flavor did you find the most useful (tegu liked the most)?

This no edit button things stinks man!

There wasn't really a brand preference. Whatever was on sale lol. I would just get strait up fruit or veggie blends. Carrots, banana, apple and a banana strawberry mix. I had originally gotten them for my beardie.

I've read about people offering different kinds of juice, I would still be careful of extra additives and maybe pay more attention to the sugar content.

Mine have eaten fruit from the beginning. They usually don't like veggies, but I have a older juvenile that ate some turnip greens the other day.

Is there a specific kind of apple juice? I know some brands are more natural and others have more sugars and other stuff in it. I always have tons of apple juice around haha, like 3-4 bottles at a time... it must be my inner child.

Really couldn't answer that, i know i read about people using apple juice a few times though. I just figured some sort of 100% all natural one jaja.. Hopefully i will come across something recommending one specific juice or someone could let me know, i might just buy a juicer.
