hello, I am a new Chacoan tegu owner. And I was just wondering two things. One is my tegu does not want to eat anything but crickets and dubias and waxworms. He will not eat anything else I offer him. No chicken hearts, liver, gizzards, ground turkey, nothing. What should I do? And about his basking spot. His basking spot last night got way hotter than when I left it, 120degrees. So I sprayed it will water and moved it down so now it's hitting 100degrees. He seemed to like the temp before though but I don't want him to burn himself. Also it's a slate on top of a pile cypress mulch so it gets hot. Help?

As for the basking spot, 120 sounds like a good temperature. It's not so hot that it will burn him.

How old is your tegu and how long have you had him? If he only wants to eat bugs/worms for now, I would let him be but continue to offer other food items, I suppose he will decide himself when he's ready for meat. I would replace the slate with wood, I would be concerned that the slate would get too hot and burn him.

He is over a month old. Almost 2. Getting larger and now eating around 100 crickets a day. And I've had him almost a month and he is very comfortable with me now. And I can put my hand on the slate without it feeling too hot and he doesn't seem to mind it and he moves off of it if he feels too hot after a while and he is showing no signs of being uncomfortable or any burns. Thanks! I will continue to offer him other foods :)

Oh good! I am glad to hear he is progressing. Have you tried to offer him a soft boiled egg (without shell)? My tegu LOVES eggs, maybe yours won't be able to resist them either!

I have and the first day he arrived he ate it and loved it! But after that one time he ate it he didn't want anymore. Doesn't want it with or without shell... And having to feed him as many insects as he eats gets to be a pain to do...:/ I wish he would eat the other foods I offer soon haha!
