Opinions on destructive behavior?

Hey lately Ive been wondering about something, and im sure there's no way to have an official answer, but I'm at least curious about everyone's opinions on tegus and their love to destroy things haha.

The reason I ask, is because a while back, maybe a moth ago, I planted a simple little plant in my enclosure. When I bought the plant, I already knew in advance that Dewie was gonna tear this thing up haha, but I continued with the purchase anyway.
Sure enough the next day, he had uprooted the thing out of the soil and flipped it over on its side. No big deal, i planted it back in and left it for another day, returned to the same results. I repeated this for a few days and eventually he stopped messing with it.

Now here's what I'm wondering.
Do you think they destroy things, like this plant, because they don't like that the plant is in there, and want to remove it? Or do you think they do it because they simply get enjoyment just from the act of ripping it up? Because if it's something he really doesn't like, I wont continue to replant it. But if he's just loving getting the chane to rip this thing out of the dirt, then I plan on continuing this game of cat and mouse for Dewie's sake haha.
What do you guys think?

At least one reason for this, I believe is curiosity- searching for food in this new addition.

The tegu's probably thinking "What's this new thing? I wonder if there are any big fat grubs or worms under it?" dig dig dig "nope."

EXACTLY! Dig, dig, scratch, scratch, scratch. Flip it over with snout. Tongue-flick, poke some more, move on.

They can really dig and poke with that snout. Last night mine was stuffed behind me on the couch, then suddenly burrowed down into my shorts... through my butt crack. Woo!

I wear crocs, which are a magnet to them. they try to get in them under my heel or poke their snouts in the holes.

Hahahaha you guys are funny. Yeah I guess it makes sense though. Every time I replant it he's thinking "oh he must have hid some food under there this time" XD
