Ok. So today when I went to check on sammi I noticed he was bleeding..I looked closely and it looks like 1 of his tail scales fell off and it is completely red and raw...please tell me he won't die from this..I'm freaking out...I put him in a travel carrier so it's clean and I wrapped his tail In a towel with neosporin on it..he's active and is eatting...but he's got a raw spot on his tail....should I take him to the vet or just let it heal...and continue to put neosporin on it and isolate him from substrate...please help I'm scared I'm going to lose him...

Nepsporin was the perfect first step. A pic would prob be helpful. It's he having a hard time shedding and that is why it happened? You may want to check his temps. To make sure it's not a burn. Or do you think he just nicked it In something? In my opinion, I would just watch it for a few days and it should heal. If it gets worse take him to the vet. If you think it's a bad shed try using cocunut oil. I rub my girl down with it almost every bath time. (I preach about cocunut oil do much i feel i should be a spokes person) I would not start to worry just yet. Keep us updated! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Your tegu probably wont die from an injury like this. They have very strong immune systems given the correct conditions. I've seen tegus who've lost their entire tail almost also entire legs and they heal just fine after they get over the stress of the whole experience. Don't panic unless it becomes infected or if it's really bleeding noticeably (a good bit more than a shaving cut on your face/legs) and once the wound is no longer open and has scabbed over you can just keep applying Neosporin 1-2 times daily.

Things seem pretty good his tail has a scab and is completely healing. He's active and eatting. And he's back to his old self :) no longer cranky when someone touches his tail.
