Hey guys I'm new to the forum. I don't have a tegu yet, but im hoping to get a black and white argentine. It's up to my parents right now! My dad hates reptiles, and my mom says that the decision is up to him. anyway, im off topic. So if I DO get a tegu, I have a question about the lighting. In our basement we have 3 75 watt and 3 50 watt halogen bulbs. I am considering using these. I am also considering using Powersuns. I want to keep it simple but also inexpemsive. For a 8 x 6 x 4 cage, what would you recommend? If i go with the powersuns, should I get 1 or two bulbs? oh and the substrate will be about 1 foot deep, if the distance ffrom the substrate to the bulb matters.

not sure on the number of bulbs you will need, but you will need more than just halogen. they don't give the uvb ighting that they need. the powersun MV bulbs will give the uvb plus the heat.

It depends on how deep the cage is. UVB tubes only project usable UVB for 12"-16". A 100W Mercury Vapor bulb is good up to 3 feet (12" min.) and a 160W up to 4 feet (18" min.). They also provide some heat but not enough, unless you're at the minimum recommended distance (12" & 18"). Using a 75W or 90W halogen next to it will increase the basking temps.
