She looks good, although I don't like to put leashes on reptiles. Is she OK with you doing it?

Doesn't mind at all. To start, I just put it on, and let her walk around to get used to it, just like you would with a dog. After a few times to let her get used to it(never forcing) she acts like its not even there. I have trained dogs in the past for people, and I am going to treat her just like a short attention spanned dog. So far my philosphy has been rewarding with her. The leash will be for her safety, I'd hate to loose her.

Just curious as to why not to put leashes on?? I know you've said that a couple of times. Mental stimulation can be a great thing.

Yes, mental stimulation is great. I just usually don't see a need for leashes. On monitors (healthy, up to temp monitors) putting a leash on can be a real struggle. Don't even get me started on the bigger ones. (At one point I tried to put a leash on a 3.5 foot sav....certainly not worth it)

Now, we all know that tegus have more "taming" potential than monitors. No matter if the tegus are cold or hot, they are almost always tame. With the monitors, "tame" only means they are tolerant of you. It doesn't mean lap pet.

I have tegus that I can take outside and just follow around, they won't run. It is easier to get a leash on a tegu, but if it takes a while or the animal struggles, it's not worth it. I prefer to leave mine in a closed space outside or simply follow them.

If yours lets you put it on with ease, and doesn't mind it, it seems like an OK thing to do. It's just that usually when I see leashes on large lizards, the animals are not healthy. (I'm not doubting your husbandry).

If it's your best way to give mental stimulation and safety at the same time, go for it. I'm glad your tegu is tame enough to get a leash on without much struggle. Mine struggle far too much for me to bother. Yes, mine are tame.

I also have problems with them getting their nails caught in the leash.

Yeah, I can imagine a monitor can be a handful, but she doesn't even flinch, just set her down, and she's ready to go! Just finished making
some laps around the house with here, and she did great again today, even better than yesterday.

Most of my adults have no problem with a leash, I rarely use one unless I am taking them to a very busy place, I would not want them to run off if they found something to be afraid of. I have never had one that got afraid of something after they were real tame, but you never know.

We only use leashes if we take them out in public. We let them free roam around the house and yard. Our 8 month old will still run and hide when we let him down. It's a bit of a struggle but he'll wear the leash.

Our tegus and dragons are pretty good about their leashes. The older tegus usually just wonder our yard with an escort (hawks), but our beardies don't like the noise outside. They seem calmer with the leashes on. :)
