does it look like I should go ahead and upgrade him to a 8x4x4 enclosure now? He is now 15 inches long in a 40 gallon. And he was 11 inches 2 and a half weeks ago. Should I upgrade him now to the large enclosure or will he feel lost in it at his size and should I upgrade him to something a little bit bigger than his current enclosure first?...

I think he's fine in it for a while more. Another option is to partition the larger cage and slowly incease living area. Goldilocks cdon't want him crowded but but not lost either at a small body size.
