I can't say for certain with tegus, but I know that with cats as an example, squinting or slowly closing your eyes while looking at them is a sign of being relaxed/not threatened. I've noticed much the same thing with my tegu, and it didn't happen until we had been cohabitating for a few days (so I felt it was similarly a sign of being more comfortable in the new environment).
