taxanomic confusion

Hello All,
I am considering a Tegu for the first time. I have worked with other lizards, chamelons, peach throat monitors, bearded dragons, and sailfins, as well as anoles. I am somewhat confused by the taxonomic differences and am trying to pick from the T. teguxin or the giant version of T. marianae. I fell in love with the pic in the book Giant Lizards, by Robert George Sprackland, but as it is out dated, I am wondering which animal I am actually looking at on page 159. At any rate, I am looking to eventually aquire a pair, but my hopes are to have a ''pet'' lizard that enjoys handling. I know this depends a lot on how the keeper interacts with the animals and on the individual tegu and that there are no gaurentees that any tegu will become a lap lizard. Can anyone make a recomendation as to whether I want an agrentine or columbian?
Thanks in advance and look forward to learning from you all.

you most likely want an argentine. The columbians can become just as tame in my opinion, but it will take much more effort on your part

If you want a little flair and some minor attitude, colombians provide plenty - most that is, but not all.

I would say colombians are a little busier, will roam more, are active longer and will keep you on your toes.

If you want a "lazier", typically more docile tegu, then what everyone suggests is true. The argentine(s) are all pretty calm and generally more "user friendly".

As with all animals, they are truly individualistic, but I would use this as a generalization of sorts and I hope it helps you along when you get ready to own one.

No matter what you end up with, I'm sure you'll be happy with the choice.

For the record, I like colombians, my gf on the other hand, loves our argentine.

Thanks for you advice. I am settled on the extreme giants, but have much to learn about hibernateing them. I am excited! I hope I can get the cage built and funds together in time for a 2012 pair!
