I am hoping to get a tegu next year and i have done lots of research. I have a few questions though. How old does a tegu have to be to sex it? If i got one i would like a baby but a male. What bulbs do people use and do you use 1 or 2 for basking? Ive read that if you dont hibernate them the live less. Is this true?

Thanks, Mikael

I cannot answer your question regarding sexing, but I use 2 bulbs, a 100 watt basking bulb and a UVB bulb to mimic sunlight. Just beware..... I've heard rumors about coil UVB bulbs damaging a tegus eyes.

I use one basking bulb at 150w and a heat mat on the bottom. To sex tegus you feel around the vent for a small hard circle on each side, I've been told kind of like a BB. If they are present, it's a male, if not, it's a female or too young to sex. Depending on where you purchase your tegu, you should be able to request what sex you want. I don't know about them living for less if you don't hibernate but personally I'm not. It's not really necessary unless you're breeding them
