Tegus are members of theTeiidae family, these include many lacertidsTeiids can be found widely distributed in the western and southern United states as well as Central America and Mexico, some are even found in many of the Caribbean islands. Nine genera are recognized: Ameiva, Callopistes, Cnemidophorus, Crocodilurus, Dicrodon, Dracaena, Kentropyx, Teius, also Tupinambis. There are 56 named species (Wright 1993), Ameiva and Kentropyx are represented also, there are a few that only contain limited species, Tupinambis, Callopistes, Teius, Dracaena, and Dicrodon. Crocodilurus is monotypic, One genus, Cnemidophorus. whiptails and racerunners are well known in the United States and often seen in the southern and Western states.
