Does anyone have some good rules/advice for telling the difference between reptile mites and "normal" soil mites?

Quick responses much appreciated!

are you seeing them on a snake or a tegu? Are they just in the soil? Did you just put new soil in an enclosure?

Well I originally saw one on the tegu, but now I have only seen them on the floor next to the tank, but i did spill a little soil on the floor. It is new soil I put in about 5 days ago and a new young tegu. I looked him over for a good 20 minutes today with a flashlight and did not find a single bug on him so I think they are from the dirt, but I'd like some opinions.

Also, they are REALLY tiny and a reddish brown color.

i would say its from the soil. Where did you buy it?

From a garden supply store. I decided to just go ahead and take it out and bake it. Then put it back in once cooled and keep an eye out for bugs.

It's easy to freak out over every little thing with a baby tegu.

Absolutely is!! Better to be safe than sorry. Personally, I never liked soil much with babies. It seemed that no matter how careful I was, they always ended up ingesting a lot of it. It never had any effect on them, I was just always over cautious with my babies.

It is pretty messy as far as getting in his water bowl but he has a top layer of lizard safe bark and I feed him in a separate substrate free tank.

Good, way to be cautious! Especially if the little bugs are red or dark in color. If they're white or transparent-ish, I've been told those are woodmites that come in the soil and appear when there's heat and humidity. But a baby tegu means being super careful :D
