I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to free roam the house when they get some size so long as you "tegu proof" the rooms they'll be exploring.
Talking about tegus right?
I started out letting them hang out on the bathroom floor or in the tub. Then we moved to a bedroom and eventually they were large enough to roam most of the house.
My two free roam sometimes all day I waited until they were 30". Make sure to lookfor anythingthey can get into theirmouths. Tonka will try and eat anything he found a round rock aout the size of a plum I came around the corner as he was trying to eat it. He will also try and eat wrappers, ear plugs, legos anything.
Try to find something to let them free roam in... As suggested above, a bathroom works great. I have a 6' round 300 gal Rubbermaid tub I used to 'free roam' my Tegu when he was a baby.
Don't be surprised if he resists being picked up / recaptured when you go to take him out of his free roam area. But after a few times, he will learn...
