hey everyone, i recently moved out of state for college and had to temporarily leave my gu-Popo back at home, ive settled in and am finally ready to get him out here, ill be going back home to visit soon and contacted united about it, and they said he can travel as luggage in a ventilated crate in a room that would be conditioned, i would prefer to go through ship your reptiles but the quote to get him out here was 600 as opposed to united which is 250, so i was wondering if anyone has had experience on having their reptiles stored as cargo and whether or not it would be safe for popo? the flight is only 3 and a half hours but i want to be certain that my big boy will be safe, thanks in advance-tommy

"Ventilated crate in a room that would be conditioned" says to me that he won't be in a pressurized cabin. You may be able to keep him warm but chances are he will be exposed to low oxygen environments. Others with experience may be able to chime in on this but I would probably advise against this. If it's only a 3.5 hour flight, maybe you can find someone to drive him the distance? Try asking Fedex or UPS directly - that reptile shipping company may put a premium on their services.

$600 shipping quote for SYR? Why such a high price? I've shipped through them before, used to get my labels from them and the prices were a whole lot (hundreds) less than that.

Actually, Josh, I'm pretty sure on modern jets the entire plane is pressurized, it just may not be heated, but even so reptiles can withstand much lower O2 and air pressure than mammals can. When I was continent hopping rather routinely and shipping animals to-and-fro, we did some testing what conditions were like in the cargo section of planes and (although I cannot make any direct claims on pressure), I know even on long trans-ocean/hemisphere flights (~10hrs), the cargo bay got down to about 15 degrees Celsius and any reptiles we placed in there survived rather well.

i may have over estimated the size for the box, ive never had to ship a reptile before, what dimensions would be recommended for a 4 and a half foot gu?

I do believe when we shipped off iggy he was close to 3 1/2 foot and the cost was somewhere around 250 Not 600. I used a box 32 x 12 x 12 somewhere around that . you want to make sure they are nice and snug in a shipping box. With not alot of wiggle room. but enough room for all the packing material as well
